What's the deal with the fact that the majority of you cannot write. Want some examples: Here in yahoo I found a girl that wrote ';I live in a smeller town'; (I guess it's so SMALL that she can't even think right) or another person that wrote ';I here you, girl!';....hello, it's writen ';hear'; as in the verb.
I live abroad and worry that I'm behind with the school program in the US and then I see all of your grammar mistakes and feel some kind of relief.
Please, some one, explain to me why the majority of you are so superficial? What is wrong with teenagers in the USA?
I think maybe it would be from the media grabbing onto what they think is socially ';Cool'; and beating us over the head with it.
Advertisers at this time of year are looking for ways to have you spend money on their products, whether they will be academically beneficial or not. Does any child really need a cellphone or laptop that allows them to watch dvd's, play games, or instantly text their friends when they should be paying attention and getting their studying completed.
We get very little assistance from our government on the matter. In the ';No Child Left Behind'; policy, the teachers and school districts are punished if they do not bring the children to the standard the government expects, yet the government does not give the teachers the tools necessary to reach the goal.
Another major factor is that poverty forces both parents to work leaving the kids on their own. If a child is not told to do their homework, do you think it will get done?
I could go on and on about the possible causes for this alarming trend, but I'm afraid that would take too long. My best advise to you is to have your children educated privately here or abroad. At least in your own mind you will be able to feel you've done the best you could and leave the rest up to them and the character of their spirit.(The character that you helped to develope)
As to whether the majority of us are superficial, I don't believe this to be accurate. I believe you are missing the definition of superficial.
Superficial Implies a concern only with surface aspects or obvious features. Many of us have ideas to where the problem is. It lies deep within the the structure of our government and the lack of respect for one another due to a number of social issues.
We do have many faults. I would be arrogant to think we don't, but, until we work them out, please do not judge the majority of us based on possible typos, slang or other misuses of our language. Judge each one of us individually. What is wrong with teenagers in the USA?
Kids today are lazy.....sad but true. It's a huge pet peeve of mine to see all this ';chat speak'; and improper use of the english language. It does make me sad for the future, but at least my child will be smart enough to know the difference between ';for'; and ';4'; or ';that'; and ';dat';. As a matter of fact...she already is...and she's 9!
Don't stress too much about it, most are only using it in their online conversations. (I hope)
There are teens, then there are teens, much the same as
it's always been. We've entered into to a world of technology
that's moving faster than we can catch up with and our
teens are doing their best to keep up, unfortunately, some
of the NECESSARY niceties (such as math, english %26amp; grammer,
polite/courteous behavior) are missed by a few of these
individuals. As a whole, believe in these young people,
after all, they'll be leading our world in the near future%26gt;
This is yahoo answers, not grammar school. The Internet has it's own world of grammar that kids and young adults use. Not to mention the fact that sometime it's more keyboarding then grammar being an issue.
I should know as I'm write all the time on the keyboard and have had several typo's.
So just chill out. It's just the Internet it doesn't mean that when they're in school, that they don;t do it right.
too much time spent in front of the tv and/or computer. maybe too much time on the yahoo (answers) site? yes %26amp; no. technology has come to the point now where we as kids, teens %26amp; adults rely on tech to both do our work %26amp; correct our mistakes. by the way? me? superficial? do you know the meaning of the word? and your not? hum! anyone who feels they are above the rabble are often below the rabble themselves, like waaaay below.! double HUM!
Why are you so quick to judge a whole demographic of people you don't even know?
We type too fast and our fingers hit the wrong keys. Also its the internet, we don't have to have perfect grammar. We save that for school. BTW its not that we can't write and what does it have to do with being superficial?
Your Face!
I honestly don't know.
I am probably more intelligent than the teenagers on Yahoo! Answers, and I'm only 12. I completely agree with you on the fact that people can't spell.
In fact, if I answered every open question with a typing error in only one category, I would probably be a level 7 or 8.
Everybody makes mistakes on the computer sometimes, and most of the time they don't even notice it. Many of the teenagers on Yahoo! Answers type the way they do on IM or in emails because it is easier and faster. That doesn't mean they're dumb. There are some very smart people out there that are horrible at typing.
Blah,blah...Let me see if I remember all the sorry excuses: 1.blame it to the Internet, yeah right like the net makes people so inadequate.
2. Typo errors, then you were flunk in typing.
3.The fingers go so fast... then you should use the ';the spell checker';.
4. It's Yahoo...so all the programmers at Yahoo make you illiterate.
5. Oh! the net has it's own language...so the Net is actually contributing to the destruction of the English language. No wonder, the Brits think we Americans are morons.
6. It's nothing get over it, instead of saying, people you need to go to school to learn to read and write? Not to worry about somebody having your same outfit. You don't even live near the fashion capitals of the world!!
7. It's just the way we communicate. So, to get good at something you practice. We are good up to this affirmation. Practice makes perfection and perfection makes you an idiot, because if you're practicing to be grammatically incorrect, consequently you are what you practice...an IDIOT!
8. Technology is moving fast, and they sure can't keep up with everything on their shoulder. The job of a son/daughter is to study...what are you breeding parasites. This will lead the world. I do not know what world, because other countries are seeing we are not that perfect as we may try to look. Competition is getting thougher and others are capitalizing in our weaknesses.
Plus, it's not only the grammar, but the whole way of analyzing, presenting and responding a question. In the majority of the cases has no sense..besides saying ';It's just like'; every other word.
In light of this, I declare that our youth's brain (many, many of them) is either fried or just vegetating...
For KG. I find your answer very logical. I took the decision of raising mine abroad years ago, and I can tell you she has grown to be a very reponsible person. Every system has it's flaws. My kids are multilingual and I used to be a corporate person, but after I relocated I stayed home...it made a big difference. The money is not the same, but they are very well rounded, with character and opinions.
I really hope things change at home..for the good.
Cheers
They just don't care. They don't worry to much about spelling. It's Yahoo Answers not the SAT's exam. Lighten up.
Unfortunately the U.S has a terrible school system. Even Mexican schools are an average of 2 years ahead of schools in the U.S.
I'm an English teacher living in South-America.I teach high school English in Suriname(country).I studied in the U.S and was appalled at the way kids studied. It was sad to see that here kids nowadays don't like to read and write.they rather watch clips or play games. The world is changing and sadly enough so are the mentalities and moralities of the teenagers.Keep on trying your best and be good.Debby
